Antenatal Classes
WELCOME TO PARENT EDUCATION
EARLY PREGNANCY CLASS
Are you 20 weeks pregnant or less?
Why not come to our early pregnancy class where you can get advice on all aspects of pregnancy.
What will be discussed?
The physical changes in pregnancy; nutritional demands in pregnancy; minor disorders of pregnancy e.g. morning sickness; advice on pregnancy posture and back care; the development of your baby in the womb; an introduction to breastfeeding.
Who will you meet?
There will be a Midwife, Dietitian and Physiotherapist present at the session and they are available to answer your questions.
When and where is this class held?
This class is held on the 1st Tuesday of each month at 10:00 am in the Maternity Outpatients Department.
PREPARATION CLASSES FOR LABOUR AND PARENTHOOD
When should you attend?
It is best to attend this programme of four antenatal classes when you are 7 months pregnant.
What topics are discussed?
List of requirements for your stay; the signs and stages of labour; breathing exercises and relaxation; pain relief options; breastfeeding; tour of the labour ward and parenting.
These classes are based on your needs and your participation and comments are very welcome.
When and where are these classes held?
These classes are held on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at different times in the Antenatal classroom in St. Angela’s Ward.
- There is a choice of couples and women’s only classes.
- Early booking is recommended.
REFRESHER CLASS
This class is for mothers who have had babies already
What is the aim of this class?
This session aims to enable mothers to focus on their pregnancy and labour.
It gives mothers the opportunity to explore their previous experience/s.
What topics are discussed?
The signs and stages of labour; breathing exercises and relaxation; options of pain relief and breastfeeding are discussed. There is also a tour of the labour ward.
When and where is this class held?
This class is held once a month on Tuesday from 10:00am to 12:00 noon in the Antenatal classroom in St. Angela’s Ward.
TOUR
A tour of the Maternity Unit can be arranged for you and your husband/partner, booking is essential.
VISITING HOURS
Visiting hours at the hospital are:
14:00 to 16:00 and 18:30 to 20:30
POST NATAL EDUCATION
This is held for women while they are in hospital following the birth of their baby.
When and where are these classes held?
These classes are held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 11.00 am on St. Angela’s Ward.
POSTNATAL PHYSIOTHERAPY
A postnatal physiotherapy class is held for women after they have had their baby
The class covers information and demonstration on posture and back care; pelvic floor and abdominal muscle exercises.
When and where are these classes held?
These classes are held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 11:30 am in the Antenatal classroom in St. Angela’s Ward.
FOLLOW-ON POSTNATAL CLASS
Mothers are welcome to attend this class up to six weeks after having their baby
It provides mothers with the opportunity to discuss any issues relating to motherhood and the adjustment that they are experiencing.
Babies are welcome too.
Information is presented by a Midwife, Physiotherapist and Dietitian.
