WOMEN’S HEALTH PHYSIOTHERAPY IN UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL, GALWAY
The Women’s Health Physiotherapy department is based in Maternity/Gynaecology outpatients in UHG. We are a dedicated and dynamic team of physiotherapists, who provide both one-to-one and group-based physiotherapy management to women during and after pregnancy as well as later in life. We use the most recent evidence base to treat a wide range of maternity and gynaecological conditions.
The Women’s Health Physiotherapy Department is open from
8:15 am to 4:15pm
Monday to Friday
If you require physiotherapy during pregnancy or up to 3 months after delivery of your baby, we accept referral from your GP, Midwife, Public Health Nurse or hospital team
If you are more than 3 months postnatal or are being referred with a gynaecological issue, we accept referral from gynae clinics/hospital teams only.
If you have delivered your baby in the last 3 months and wish to attend our ‘Postnatal Bodycare Workshop’, you can ring the Physiotherapy Department directly on 091-544489 to book your place
If you have an appointment with us in Physiotherapy, please note the following information:
If you wish to cancel an appointment, 24hours / one working day notice is required so we can fill your treatment slot with someone else on our waiting list
More than 2 cancellations or 1 non-attendance will result in immediate discharge
Please allow ample time for parking in the hospital. We may have to reschedule your appointment if you are more than 10 minutes late

Management of Pregnancy related Low Back and Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP)
This interactive small group workshop is to help women who are struggling with low back, pelvic girdle and symphysis pubis pain in pregnancy. We discuss the causes, incidence and presentation of PGP and demonstrate techniques to help promote ease of movement during pregnancy; We teach muscle release techniques to help ease pain as well as a programme of gentle, safe and appropriate exercises.
Referral from your GP, hospital team or midwife is essential to attend this workshop.
Postnatal Bodycare Workshop
We encourage ALL women to attend our postnatal bodycare workshop any time up to 3 months after having a baby. The workshop is aimed at promoting optimal physical recovery and a safe return to exercise for all women postnatally. We cover bladder and bowel care, pelvic floor strengthening, posture and backcare, checking your ‘abdominal gap’, abdominal strengthening and guidelines on safe return to exercise including running postnatally. We keep our group sizes small (max 8 women) to promote a relaxed, interactive and enjoyable experience.

You must have delivered your baby in UHG to attend this workshop.
