What to pack for your hospital stay
Packing Your Hospital Bag
- If you carry your hospital notes do not forget to bring them with you.
- If you have written a Birth Plan ensure it is enclosed in your notes.
- If you have a TENS machine bring it with you.
This is a guide for a 48 hour stay. You might like to pack the following:
You will need two bags
- – One small bag for the Labour Ward
- – One bag for the Postnatal Ward.

Labour Ward Bag
Items for Mother
- Clothes to mobilise in labour, dressing gown & slippers
- Bath towel
- Maternity Sanitary towels (super absorbent)
- Disposable underwear
- Support bra x 2 (measure at 37 weeks)
- Front opening nightdress or t-shirt to aid skin to skin contact
- Water spray to cool you down
- Massage oil, music, lip balm
- Wash bag, face cloth
- Isotonic drinks, snacks

Postnatal Bag
Items for Mother
- Super Absorbent Sanitary towels
- Disposable underwear
- Front opening nightdresses or t-shirts to aid skin to skin contact
- Towels, phone charger
- Wash bag
- Face cloth
- Cotton breast pads
- PPS number and photo ID for babies birth cert (€20)
- Comfortable clothes for going home
- Gift for other children if this is not your first baby
Items for Baby
- Nappy
- Babygro
- Vest
- Hat
- 3 cellular blankets
- 2 medium towels
- Barrier cream
- Camera

Items for Baby
- Nappies
- Large roll of cotton wool
- Baby grow (8), Vests (8)
- Hats, socks.
- Muslin squares
- 3 cellular blankets
- 2 handtowels
- A small plastic bowl
- Barrier cream
