Booking a Class Instructions

Every month, UHG Maternity Parent Education Services Department run a series of classes free of charge to the public.
We offer a wide variety of courses:
  • Early Pregnancy Class – one class/women’s only – less than twenty weeks – optional
  • Couples Antenatal Classes – choice of morning, afternoon, evening classes – three classes over a three week period – start on the first week of every month
  • Women’s Only Courses – two sessions women’s only & one with partner
  • Refresher Classes – If you already had a baby, you might like to attend a one off ‘refresher’ class
  • Post Natal Reunion Class – 6-8 weeks following the birth of your baby – Please book after the birth of your baby.
When booking your class if there is no availability in the chosen month, please add your details to the waiting list.

 

Timeline

Early Pregnancy

Are you 20 weeks pregnant or less?
Why not come to our early pregnancy class where you can get advice on all aspects of pregnancy.

What will be discussed?

  • The physical changes in pregnancy
  • Nutritional demands in pregnancy
  • Minor disorders of pregnancy
  • Morning sickness
  • Advice on pregnancy posture and back care
  • The development of your baby in the womb
  • An introduction to breastfeeding

Who will you meet?
There will be a Midwife, Dietition and Physiotherapist present at the session and they are available to answer your questions.

When and where is the class held?
This class is held on the 1st Tuesday of each month at 10.00am in the Maternity Outpatients Department.

Preparation Classes for Labour and Parenthood

When should you attend?
Is is best to attend this programme of three antenatal classes when you are 7 months pregnant.

What topics are discussed?

  • List of requirements for your stay
  • The signs and stages of labour
  • Breathing exercises and relaxation
  • Pain relief options
  • Breastfeeding
  • Tour of the labour ward and parenting

These classes are based on your needs and your participation and comments are very welcome

When and where are these classes held?
These classes are held on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at different times in the Maternity Outpatients Department.
Early booking is recommended.

Refresher Classes

What is the aim of this class?
This session aims to enable mothers to focus on their pregnancy and labour.
It gives mothers the opportunity to explore their previous experience/s.

What topics are discussed?

  • The signs and stages of labour
  • Breathing exercises and relaxation
  • Options of pain relief and breastfeeding are discussed
  • Tour of the labour ward and parenting

When and where is this class held?
This class is held twice a month on Tuesday from 10.00am to 12.00pm in the Maternity Outpatients Department.

Tours: A tour of the Maternity Unit can be arranged for you and your husband/partner, booking is essential. Contact us here for further information.

Visiting: Visiting hours at the hospital are: 14.00 – 16.00 and 18.30 to 20.30

Post Natal Education: This is held for women while they are in hospital following the birth of their baby. These sessions are held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 11am on St. Angela’s Ward and is followed by an optional (4-6 week postnatal) reunion class.

Post Natal Physiotherapist: A postnatal physiotherapist class is held for women after they have had their baby. This class covers information and demonstration on posture and back care, pelvic floor and abdominal muscle exercises.

These classes are held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 11.15am in St. Angela’s Ward. You can reserve a place for this class by registering here first and then booking a suitable class of your choice after you have registered.

Follow-on PostNatal Class: Mothers are welcome to attend this class up to six weeks after having their baby. It provides mothers with the opportunity to discuss any issues relating to motherhood and the adjustment that they are experiencing. Babies are welcome too. Information is presented by a Midwife, Physiotherapist and Dietition.
